Job Summary

POSITION: PRESCHOOL CENTER COOK

PROGRAM: Step by Step Early Learning Childcare Center (South Lake Tahoe)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Childcare Center Cook is responsible for maintaining the food program in all of its various aspects including food procurement meal preparation, food distribution to classrooms, proper food safety, personal hygiene and sanitation while ensuring compliance with the CACFP nutritional guidelines.

Note: The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child Nutrition Program designed to reimburse facilities for nutritious meals served to children or adults in a day care environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Comply with safe food handling regulations set by Licensing Title 22, Title 5 and the CACFP guidelines.

  • Maintain ServSafe certification issued by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

  • Practice safe food handling techniques in food preparation and storage.

  • Prepare nutritious meals and snacks for up to 135 children following proper measurement guidelines; prepare substitute items for children on restricted diets.

  • Distribute properly covered food to the classrooms in appropriate and approved containers in a timely manner. This ensures food is served at the proper temperatures.

  • Keep a daily record of prepared menu and ensure teachers take Point-of-Service headcount at meal times.

  • In collaboration with the Program Supervisor, plan for purchase of all food necessary supplies needed to provide food service to include verification of food and non-food purchases to meet the CACFP requirements.

  • Obtain and retain manufacturers’ specifications (or Child Nutrition Label) for any commercially prepared food items not listed in the Food Buying Guide.

  • Develop weekly menus to meet CACFP meal pattern requirements with seasonal updates to keep the menu fresh for the children.

  • Keep a daily meal production record following the requirements of the CACFP using the Food Buying Guide to calculate serving amounts.

  • Maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen, pantry and storage areas; wash items used for food preparation and serving. Clean and sanitize refrigerator and freezer, clean tables, sweep and mop floors, and dispose of refuse.

  • Attend in-service trainings and center functions as required.

  • Participate in training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth related to the USDA Food Program. Complete 21 professional continuing education hours required annually.

  • And any other duties needed to help drive to our Vision, fulfill our Mission, and abide by our Organization’s Values.

REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Training in food preparation and previous experience

  • Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

ABILITY TO:

  • Maintain organized systems and juggle multiple tasks.

  • Work independently and manage time effectively.

  • Interact with young children in a nurturing a respectful manner.

  • Ability to develop rapport and positive working relationships with co workers.

  • Utilize computer programs to complete job requirements.

OTHER:

  • Possess a valid Driver’s License and have reliable transportation.

  • Pediatric first aid and CPR certification.

  • Must pass fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice.

  • Must pass Health Screening and TB test prior to employment

  • Must be able to move quickly, turn, sit, stoop, bend, kneel and stand throughout the day.

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Regular onsite attendance is required of this position.
